Formerly “Quest”
After numerous discussions, the 2017-18 Quest Executive Board decided to change the name of the organization from Quest Scholars to FLI (First-Generation and/or Low Income) Scholars, pronounced like the word “fly”. Our new name will be officially implemented by the beginning of the 2018-19 school year.
Why are we changing our name?
The main reason for this change is to be more inclusive of the first-generation and/or low-income identity by recognizing that not all first-generation and/or low-income students have a relationship with the QuestBridge scholarship. Following that reasoning, we believed FLI scholars would allow us to better connect with other first-generation and/or low-income identity groups across the Claremont Colleges and country who also do not hold ties with QuestBridge.
Pomona’s Admission Rates of FLI Applicants
The line graph below marks
(1) the percentage of admitted applicants who identify as first-generation
(2) the number of admitted Questbridge Match Scholars
(3) the number of admitted Pomona Academy for Youth Success (PAYS) Scholars
As of Spring 2026, we can see that the number of admitted applicants who identify as first-generation peaked its highest in the most recent admissions cycle. This positive trend line (lighter blue) indicates a continuing increase of first-generation scholars. The number of Questbridge Match scholars and PAYS scholars seem to boom starting with the class of 2029 and remaining similar for the class of 2030. 25 Questbridge Matches in the previous 2 cycles has been the highest number the college has seen, doubling their numbers since the Class of 2019-ish.
